What is Sunday Morning Worship Like at UBC?

The Glory of God: Our Highest Aim in Worship

Worship is ultimately not about us, it is about God.

Our highest aim in worship is the glory of God because our highest aim in all of life is the glory of God. It is the purpose for which we have been created.

Therefore, when we gather for worship, God is the intended audience for all that we do.

  • in worship our attention is drawn upward towards God and his greatness,
  • in worship we declare that our highest allegiance and devotion belongs to him,
  • in worship we celebrate his glory and goodness towards us chiefly displayed in the gospel.

The Gospel: The Center and Shape of Worship

The Gospel gives us the shape of Worship

In worship we rehearse the great story of redemption that God is telling.

  • The story begins with God and his glory; who has created and rules over all things;
  • It speaks of man’s creation in God’s image and fall into sin and misery;
  • It speaks of what God has done to rescue us from sin and condemnation through the incarnation, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ;
  • through union with Christ by faith, our sin is forgiven, and we are restored to enjoy communion with God, that we were created for.

This is the grand story that encompasses all of history. This is the story that is reflected and echoed in the life-story of every Christian. And this is the story that interprets and guides us through the particulars and details of our daily lives.

We want our weekly worship on the Lord’s Day to reverberate with that same story that is being told and retold again and again throughout the course of our lives.

God’s Word: The Foundation and Guide for Worship

The Scriptures give us the content of worship.

How do we decide what to do when we gather for worship? Thankfully we don’t have to guess. God tells us in the Bible how to worship him in a way that pleases him. And we want God to be pleased with our worship! So we seek to conform our worship to the pattern of Biblical instruction and example.

Following the Scriptures, we give attention to:

  • Prayer (Eph 6:18)
  • Singing (Eph 5:19)
  • The public reading of Scripture (1 Tim 4:13)
  • The regular preaching of Scripture (2 Tim 4:2)
  • Giving (1 Cor 16:2)
  • The Sacraments: Baptism (Matt 28:18–20) and the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:19)

Worship was not our idea, Worship is God’s idea. We want to listen and rely on his word as the foundation of our worship. Just as God’s word guides us through all of life, showing us how to live lives that honor and glorify him, so also God’s word guides us when we gather to worship him.

Gather to Grow: What We’re Building When We Worship

Worship is a gift for worshippers.

Scripture emphasizes the importance of community as a distinctive mark of the church as we are called to obey all of the “one another” commands of Scripture.

God saves people individually through faith in Christ, but then he gathers them into communities of faith where we are to love, serve, guard, and build up one another.

All of life is to be lived for the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). But corporate worship on the Lord’s Day is special. It is set apart from the rest of our week because it is when the whole church gathers together to glorify God and to edify one another in ways that we can’t do on our own when we are apart from each other.

FAQ

What Should I Wear?

Some of us may be dressed up a bit more, many will be dressed more casually. We believe that God cares much more about the condition of our hearts than our external appearance. When you join us for worship, please feel free to dress however you feel comfortable.

Where Should I Park?

We have a small parking lot behind our building (Turn on Allan Ct). Additionally, street parking is available.

Children in Worship?

Children of all ages are welcome in corporate worship.  A variety of children’s Bibles, books, and activities are available at the back for your family’s use.

Children’s Sermon: During the service children of all ages will be invited to join the pastor up front for a brief Bible lesson (except on weeks when we are observing the Lord’s Supper).

Parents of Young Children: We know it can be hard for little ones to sit in the service. Should you or they need a break, there is a room in the back, equipped with audio of the service, that you may make use of.
